Alopecia Areata
What is Alopecia Areata?
Alopecia areata is a condition characterized by patchy hair loss, which may also be accompanied by hair loss on other parts of the body. It can affect both children and adults, males and females, and is most commonly found around the age of 30.
What causes Alopecia Areata?
The cause of alopecia areata is believed to be an immune system abnormality that attacks the hair follicles, leading to hair loss. It is found to be associated with certain conditions such as severe stress, hyperthyroidism, allergies, and various autoimmune diseases like SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus), rheumatoid arthritis, and vitiligo, as well as viral infections and the use of certain medications.
Symptoms of Alopecia Areata
The scalp in the affected area typically shows well-defined circular patches of hair loss, which can occur in one or multiple locations. The skin in the bald patches usually looks like normal scalp skin, though some individuals may experience burning or itching in the affected areas. Additionally, hair loss may occur on other parts of the body, such as eyebrows, eyelashes, and beards. Symptoms can develop gradually or occur suddenly. Some patients may recover on their own with hair growing back normally. In some cases, the condition can be chronic and recurring, while in others, the hair may never grow back.
How is Alopecia Areata treated?
Generally, in most patients, hair can regrow on its own without treatment. For patients with an underlying autoimmune condition, treating the autoimmune disease will also help improve hair loss. Additionally, there are various treatment options available, such as:
📌 Excimer Laser: This involves UVB 380 nm light therapy to inhibit the activity of abnormally functioning T-cell white blood cells.
📌 Topical immunotherapy applied to the affected area, such as Topical diphenylcyclopropenone (TDCP).
📌 Topical hair loss medications: Used as an aid to stimulate faster hair regrowth.
Additionally, patients should take care of their overall health by getting adequate rest, eating a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients and vitamins, and avoiding stress and other triggers that can lead to hair loss.
